Five new artistic murals, all painted by Rogers Park artists, will grace the walls of CTA and Metra underpasses in the coming year.
The murals are made possible by the Underpass Mural Project, which was one of the funding proposals approved by the voters in the 49th Ward Participatory Budgeting election last April.
Earlier this summer, I put out a call to all Rogers Park artists to submit proposed designs for five underpass murals–two at the Albion CTA viaduct, one at the Columbia CTA viaduct, and two at the Lunt Metra viaduct. The artists were required to either live in Rogers Park or have a studio located within Rogers Park.
Thirty-nine proposed mural designs were submitted for consideration and a blue-ribbon panel of respected public art experts selected by the PB49 Arts and Innovation Committee evaluated the mural submissions, without knowing the identity of the artists, and made recommendations to the committee. The panel consisted of:
- Nathan Mason, Curator of Special Projects at the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events;
- Tanya Marquez, Mezz Gallery curator, assistant manager at the Mayne Stage Theater and a member of the Rogers Park Arts Alliance;
- Lea Pinsky, Project Manager of the Rogers Park Business Alliance’s Mile Murals Project and Director of Education for Lifeline Theater.
The winning artists are:
- Kay Bass and Rachel Hoffman;
- Kaye Buchman;
- Nicky Melon
- Cole Pierce
- Megan Sterling

Each winning artist will receive a stipend of $5,400 to execute their murals and will be assigned an underpass wall on which to paint their mural. The following underpass walls are slated to receive a mural:
Albion (north and south walls)
Columbia (south wall)
Union Pacific (Metra) Underpass
Lunt (north and south walls)
Most of the underpasses will be painted this summer and fall and the remainder next spring. These five murals will complete the 49th Ward Underpass Mural Project. Together with the Rogers Park Business Alliance Mile of Murals project, nearly every CTA and Metra viaduct will be graced by a beautiful mural, transforming Rogers Park into one large outdoor art gallery!
Congratulations to the winners and many thanks to the 39 artists who submitted proposals to the competition. It’s a testament to our community that so many artists wished to have their work displayed in the 49th Ward.
