Our Lake Michigan shoreline will be home to two special community events this weekend: the Fire Department’s Air Sea Rescue Unit’s water safety demonstration and the 49th Ward Back to School Community Picnic. Get the details below:
Fire Department Air Sea Rescue Unit water safety demonstration, Saturday, 1:00 p.m., Greenleaf and the Lake
If you hear a helicopter flying over the Rogers Park lakefront this Saturday afternoon, don’t be alarmed. In all likelihood, it will be part of a special WATER SAFETY DEMONSTRATION that I am sponsoring with the Chicago Fire Department’s Air Sea Rescue Unit and the Chicago Park District.
The demonstration is taking place this Saturday, August 25th, 1:00 p.m., at Greenleaf Ave. and the Lake (just east of the Loyola Park Park Fieldhouse). I strongly encourage all Rogers Park residents concerned about water safety to attend this presentation, but I especially urge parents to bring their children.
Those attending the demonstration will learn about how to be safe at the beach and around water and what to do when someone gets in trouble. Swimming in Lake Michigan is a totally different environment than swimming in a pool, and things can happen in the lake that don’t happen in a swimming pool. These are among the topics that will be addressed at Saturday’s presentation.
The Fire Department also will demonstrate a typical water and fire rescue operation using one of its Bell 412 EP helicopters and its 92-foot fire boat, the Christopher Wheatley, which is capable of shooting 17,000 gallons of water per minute. The department’s SCUBA Team 687 also will be on hand to interact with you and let you see their rescue apparatus.
49th Ward Back to School Community Picnic, Sunday, 12 noon to 4:00 p.m., Farwell and the Lake
Join State Senator Heather Steans and me for an afternoon of family fun at the 28th Annual 49th Ward BACK TO SCHOOL PICINIC! A family tradition since 1991, the picnic will be held on Sunday, August 26th, 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m., in Loyola Park at Farwell and the Lake.
We’re serving up plenty of free food and refreshing soft drinks and offering a host of games and prizes.
We’ll have bingo for the seniors and face painting and puppet shows for the kids, a DJ spinning your favorite tunes, dance contests, a moonwalk and other large, inflatable carnival toys. And most of all, we’re giving away backpacks filled with free school supplies to families!
The world famous Jesse White Tumbling Team headlines the picnic with a stunning performance of their aerobatics.
The Tumblers have been thrilling audiences since 1959. Their acrobatic performances can be seen during half-time shows for the National Basketball Association, the National Football League and Major League Baseball games. Many thanks to Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin for sponsoring the Tumblers’ appearance again this year.
In short, it will be a fun day for EVERYONE! So stop by even if your kids are grown or you’ve never had kids and enjoy a beautiful Sunday afternoon in one of Chicago’s most gorgeous lakefront parks.
For more information on both events, please reply to this e-mail or call my Ward Service Office at 773-338-5796.
I look forward to seeing you at one or both events this weekend!
