Every Friday during the summer, I send an email highlighting plays, movies, concerts, restaurant specials, special events, and other enjoyable ways to spend your time (and money) in Rogers Park. If you have an event you would like to see included in this weekly feature, please email my office at email@example.com.
This is sure to be another fun-packed weekend in the 49th Ward. From Shakespeare in the Park to quirky neighborhood traditions, you are bound to find an event that interests you.
Enjoy another great weekend in Rogers Park!
“The Winter’s Tale” in the Park
Where: Touhy Park (7348 N. Paulina)
Enjoy one classic Shakespeare theater al fresco as the Honest Theatre Company brings “The Winter’s Tale” to life at Touhy Park. Please pay what you can to support the company and the Rogers Park arts community.
Set in Italy, “The Winter’s Tale” is one of William Shakespeare’s best-known works. From drama to romance to comedy, this play is sure to please any crowd member.
The Honest Theatre Company is best known for their traveling performances and their “pay-what-you-can” policy.
Where: Hello! Howard Community Garden (1593 W. Howard)
Join the Peterson Garden Project at Hello! Howard Community Garden for a quintessential Rogers Park event: a gnome decorating competition. The best decorated gnomes will be rewarded prizes for various themes, including the gnomes with the most Facebook likes and the top three gnomes, as judged by the Peterson Garden volunteer board. This event is B.Y.O.G. (bring your own gnome). The organizers suggest that gnomes may be purchased at RAM Art Studio (6054 N. Broadway) or other fine gnome retailers.
As if this weren’t enough, enjoy refreshments provided by Smack Dab Bakery, music from Tim Williams, face painting, and more! Although admission into the event is free, all proceeds from food and other activities will support the Peterson Garden Project’s free community programming at their Pop-Up Victory Gardens (of which Hello! Howard is one) and the Community Cooking School.
The Peterson Garden Project works to promote healthy living in the most interactive, cost-effective, and fun manner. They specialize in transforming vacant parcels awaiting development into vibrant community spaces.

Celebrate Independence Day with fireworks! The City of Chicago’s display will be launched from Navy Pier starting at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4th. Rogers Parkers also may take advantage of other fireworks shows from our suburban neighbors to the north. Please celebrate the 4th of July safely and leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals!
