This is my second summary of upcoming weekend events in the 49th Ward.
Every Friday during the summer, I send an email highlighting plays, movies, concerts, restaurant specials, special events and other enjoyable ways to spend your time (and money) in Rogers Park. If you have an event you would like to see included in this weekly feature, please email my office at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The upcoming weekend is sure to be fun-packed for the 49th Ward. From La La Land in the Park to the Artists of the Wall Festival and “Follow Me on Friday” to Crepes on the Beach, you are bound to find events that interest you.
Enjoy another great weekend in Rogers Park!
La La Land in Touhy Park
When: Saturday, June 17 (9 p.m.)
Where: Touhy Park (7348 N. Paulina)
La La Land is a critically-acclaimed, Oscar-winning musical telling the story of aspiring artists (Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling) who work together to achieve success in L.A’s cutthroat arts community. Watch as the two try to maintain a normal life while realizing their life-long dreams.
If seeing this incredible movie isn’t enough, watching it in one of Rogers Park’s most beloved parks will make the experience even better. The movie is free and rated PG-13.
Created in 1954, Touhy Park is a gathering place for community life in the neighborhood. With the help of a dedicated group of volunteers, Touhy Park puts on plays, concerts and movies throughout the summer and provides a safe and beautiful space for local goings-on. The park is integral part of life in Rogers Park. Please enjoy one of 2016’s best movies in one of Chicago’s best parks.
Artists of the Wall Festival
When: Saturday, June 17 – Sunday, June 18 (9 a.m.-dusk)
Where: Loyola Park (Farwell and the Lake)
If you’ve ever wondered how the benches along the lake in Loyola Park Beach became so colorful, here is your answer: the Artists of the Wall Festival. Each year over Father’s Day weekend, artists and ordinary neighbors of all ages come together to collaborate on a 600-foot mural at Loyola Park Beach between Farwell and Morse Avenues. Coordinated by members of the Loyola Park Advisory Council, the festival is an annual celebration of our lakefront and all that we love about Rogers Park.
Don’t miss the Windform Music Stage, located at Toby Prinz Beach (Pratt and the Lake). Various shows will run from noon p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Check the schedule to see if your favorite Chicago artist will be there!
The festival raises money for important community events such as father-daughter dances, African-American heritage celebrations, youth sports programs, and more. Please come to the festival and support of local park and local artists.
Loyola Park Dune Restoration Workday
When: Saturday, June 17 (9:30 a.m.)
Where: Loyola Park Dunes (north of the pier, between the Pratt and Farwell street-ends)
Enjoy the beautiful summer weather and help the environment as the Loyola Dunes Restoration Project protects our neighborhood’s beloved dunes. Not only is this a day to weed out invasive species, but also to bird watch and learn about the diverse species of Lake Michigan.
If you would like to join the work day, please remember to dress in layers. Temperatures by the lake often can be as much as 10 to 20 degrees cooler than temperatures just a few blocks inland. In addition, wear plenty of sunscreen and bring a hat. Gloves, tools, and instructions will be provided. This event is a great opportunity to get to know Rogers Park from a unique and beautiful perspective. Don’t hesitate to join!
Follow Me on Friday to Crepes on the Beach
Where: Crepes on the Beach (Greenleaf and the Lake)
Start your weekend on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan and enjoy even more beautiful food at Crepes on the Beach.
Located where Greenleaf Avenue ends at the Lake, Crepes on the Beach offers an array of sweet and savory crepes, as well as traditional beach fare, such as hot dogs, chips, nachos and ice cream. Owners Ifrain and Debbie Cruz (photo below) say they make the crepes using “only ingredients you can pronounce, such as flour, milk and eggs.”
Stop by Friday after work and enjoy a free sampler crepe, cut into three pieces so you can try different flavors. You’ll have your choice sweet or savory crepes, such as chicken mole, spinach and ricotta and much more! In keeping with the summer season and it’s beach location, I will serve up your choice of refreshing margaritas, beer, wine or soft drinks.
“Follow Me on Friday” is one of my efforts to encourage Rogers Park residents to sample some of the 49th Ward’s finest restaurants, pubs and businesses. About once or twice a month, I post on my Facebook page the name and location of a local restaurant, pub or business where I’ll be hanging out after work on Friday. The establishment offers specials for all my Facebook followers and their friends.
It’s a great opportunity for you to check out some of our great local businesses you may not have visited before.

Where: 49th Ward Service Office (7356 N. Greenview)
The Chicago City Clerk’s office will sell City Vehicle Stickers at my 49th Ward Service Office. No additional fee will be charged for this convenience. Please note that this sale is only for residents whose stickers expire at the end of June or July.

Glenwood Sunday Market
When: Sunday, June 18 (9 a.m.- 2 p.m.)
Where: Glenwood between Morse and Lunt
“Pop” over to the Glenwood Sunday Market and you’ll find just about everything you’ll need to celebrate Father’s Day! From eggs and bacon to kale and wheatgrass shots, Glenwood Sunday Market’s farmers and food artisans hope you they’ll be a part of your weekend.
This week’s featured vendor is Celestial Kitchens, an amazing bakery that offers up a marvelous array of cookies, sweet and savory pastries, clever sweet tables and stunning cakes that taste as great as they look. Yum!
