Below are news and upcoming events surrounding the popular Glenwood Sunday Market:
I’m pleased to report that as of this morning (Friday), the Glenwood Sunday Market, is now the number one Illinois vote-getter in its category and the third highest Illinois vote-getter overall in the American Farmland Trust’s America’s Favorite Market contest! The Market is a community-run farmers’ market and is held every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Glenwood between Morse and Lunt in the heart of theGlenwood Avenue Arts District.
The winners of that contest will receive $3,000. And for the first time this year, the market with the most votes in each state will also win a prize! That money would go a long way because, aside from a small subsidy from the Morse/Glenwood SSA and part-time help from one of my staff assistants, the Glenwood Sunday Market is funded entirely by private donations.
Please visit the American Farmland Trust website and VOTE for the Glenwood Sunday Market in zip code 60626 as your favorite farmers’ market. In addition to bragging rights, winning the contest would give the Glenwood Sunday Market additional resources to make the Market even better!
The Glenwood Sunday Market is the greenest market in the City of Chicago, featuring organic and sustainably locally grown produce, all from farms within 200 miles of the 49th Ward. To meet our farmers, CLICK HERE. I encourage you to engage the farmers at the market and ask them questions. They hold a wealth of knowledge about food preparation and what is in season in our region.
Mark your calendar for BIKE AND FITNESS DAY at the Market Sunday, July 10th. The festivities kick off with a COMMUNITY BICYCLE RIDE. I’ll lead a bike tour of the 49th Ward, starting at my Ward Service Office and concluding at the Glenwood Sunday Market.
Join us Sunday, July 10th, 7:30 a.m., at my Ward Service Office, 7356 N. Greenview (at Jarvis) for some breakfast snacks and registration. We’ll push off promptly at 8:00 a.m. and enjoy a scenic tour of our neighborhood.
We’ll conclude our ride at BIKE AND FITNESS DAY at the Market where local businesses and organizations will provide bike parking, safety checks, helmet fittings, cycling merchandise, fitness specialists, safety tips and more! The Recylery will also be there, accepting donations of used bikes.
Finally, after all that healthy biking, indulge yourself with an ice cream at the SUNDAY ICE CREAM SOCIAL. Sponsored by the Rogers Park Community Council and Duke’s Bar, the Ice Cream Social will take place Sunday, July 10th, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., on Glenwood between Morse and Farwell (one block south of the Market).
They will be serving up homemade ice cream using fresh ingredients from the Glenwood Sunday Market. Soda, pizza, and sweet desserts and treats also will be provided. And there’ll be games for the kids. And it’s all for the low, low price of $5! Proceeds will benefit the Glenwood Sunday Market’s Market for All program, which enables low income families and individuals to purchase fresh produce at the Market.
In case you were wondering, the Glenwood Sunday Market will be open for business this Sunday, July 3rd with most of your favorite vendors. Everything from vegetables to granola to lamb chops to brats to gourmet ice cream and then some will be available for purchase.
Have a happy and safe 4th of July!
