Last week I sent an email about some promising statistics regarding a reduction in serious crime in the 24th Police District. The statistics revealed that the 24th District, which includes the 49th Ward and the Rogers Park community, experienced a 21% decrease in serious crimes last year. This includes a 57% decrease in homicides and a 29% decrease in shooting incidents.
The 24th District also includes the 50th Ward, as well as portions of the 40th and 48th Wards. A number of people have asked me to provide crime statistics for the 49th Ward only. As the statistics in the chart below indicate, the decline in serious crime is even more pronounced in the 49th Ward:
The 49th Ward last year experienced a 24% reduction in serious crime. The 49th Ward also experienced a greater reduction in crime overall. The 49th Ward last year saw a 12% reduction in crime overall while the 24th District experienced a nine percent reduction.
These statistics should not in any way diminish the gravity of the two horrific crimes which occurred in recent weeks–the sexual assault on North Shore and the homicide at Pratt and Clark. Though these incidents were incredibly disturbing, and we should remain vigilant, they should not take away from the overall progress the 24th District Police and our community volunteers have made in making the 49th Ward a safer place in which to live.
