Trash to Treasure Swap, Electronics Recycling, and Paper Shredding Coming Soon

June 4, 2015

Dear Neighbor,

Recycling_logoMy popular “Trash to Treasure Swap” is taking place on Saturday, June 13th, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and we’re combining it with two other popular events–Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding!  All three events will be held at the Chicago Math and Science Academy, 7212 N. Clark Street(across from Touhy Park, just south of the City of Chicago firehouse).

TRASH TO TREASURE SWAP

SHRED AND RECYCLE YOUR OLD PAPERS AND DOCUMENTS

TRASH TO TREASURE SWAP

Have you ever heard the old saying, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure”?  We’re going to again take that adage to a new level on the weekend of June 13th and 14th when I sponsor another “TRASH TO TREASURE SWAP.”

Alderman_Joe_Moore_49th_Ward_Trash_to_Treasures_SwapThe Swap this year will be held at the Chicago Math and Science Academy’s new gymnasium.  The school is located at 7212 N. Clark Street (across from Touhy Park, just south of the City of Chicago firehouse).  On Saturday, June 13th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., drop off things you no longer want or need, but are still usable for others.  Come back on Sunday, June 14th, to take home a treasure or two.

Those who drop off items on Saturday get tickets to the “Preview Pick-Up” for first dibs on others’ unwanted stuff.  The Preview Pick-Up will take place on Sunday, June 14th, from 12 Noon to 2:00 p.m.  Certified school teachers are also welcome during this preview period to obtain classroom items.  After the Preview Pick-Up, the doors will open from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., to anyone else who wishes to avail themselves of the remaining hidden treasures.

I want to offer a very special thank you to all our volunteers who have organized these swaps and diverted truckloads of usable goods from our landfills.  If you would like to volunteer, please contact Bob Fuller atrobert.fuller@cityofchicago.org.

Below are some examples of items you might want to swap:

Household Goods
Toys
Art
Furniture
Craft Materials
Hardware
Jewelry
Kitchen utensils & pots & pans
Appliances
Lamps
Knick Knacks
Leftover Wrapping Paper
Baby strollers & furniture
Bed frames
DVD’s & CD’s
Building Supplies
Bicycles, bike parts and accessories
Bookshelves
Packing materials
Electronics
Holiday Decorations
Garden Supplies
Plastic bins
Lawn Chairs
Exercise equipment
Sporting Goods
Canned goods &
Non-perishable food
Office supplies

Please do NOT bring clothing, shoes (except sports equipment), mattresses or upholstered furniture.

Please keep our local school teachers in mind, who at our last swap were thrilled to find office supplies, craft items, toys, books and puzzles for their classrooms.

Start going through your attic, closets and storage lockers, and join us on Saturday, June 13th, and Sunday, June 14th!

RECYCLE YOUR OLD ELECTRONICS

E-waste_recyclingIf you have old electronics that are no longer usable, bring them to the Swap anyway.  We’ve brought back by popular demand, COM2 Recycling Solutions , who will recycle your old electronics in a safe and secure fashion.  Their recycling truck will be located in the parking lot of the Chicago Math and Science Academy, 7212 N. Clark, Saturday, June 13th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Under COM2 Recycling Solutions’ state-of-the-art processing system, all data is destroyed in a secure fashion and the equipment they recycle is made totally inoperable.  The company maintains a 99% recovery rate, so you know your electronics will stay out of landfills.

COM2 Recycling Services will accept the following items for recycling:

• Computers and peripherals
• Printers
• Fax machines
• Scanners
• Cables
• Telephones
• Cell phones
• Small appliances

SHRED AND RECYCLE YOUR OLD PAPERS AND DOCUMENTS

During the first day of the Swap, a mobile shredding truck sponsored by Midway Document Destruction’s Mobile Shredding Truck will be providing free paper shredding and recycling to residents of the 49th Ward.

Midway Document ShredderStop by the parking lot of the Chicago Science and Math Academy, 7212 N. Clark on Saturday, June 13th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and get rid of any old or unwanted papers. Because the documents are shredded, you won’t have to worry about anyone being able to read your private information.  Just bring your old documents to the truck, where they will be shredded on the spot in front of you and then taken away to be recycled.

Bring any documents you no longer need or want but that might contain personal or private information. Examples include:

• Bank Statements
• Outdated medical records
• Pay stubs
• Old bills and receipts
• Credit card offers
• Tax returns older than seven years

Please join us on Saturday, June 13th, for a day of recycling and reusing!

Sincerely,

Joe Moore
