As we enter the busiest shopping season of the year, I urge you to spend some time, and some dollars, shopping here in our neighborhood. And invite your friends to join you!
As we continue striving to make Rogers Park more sustainable, we need to build a retail environment where most of our needs are met locally. The more our existing businesses succeed, the better our odds of attracting additional quality shops and services.
Scroll down to the end of this email and read about the ten good reasons to shop in Rogers Park.

Small Business Saturday Welcome Station and Selfie Event

You’ll get a free tote bag filled with goodies (first 100 visitors) and a list of 21 participating businesses who will be offering specials and discounts all day.
While shopping at the participating stores, take a selfie at each business you visit and share it on social media with the hashtags: #shopsmallropa, #shopsmall and #loverogerspark. The person who posts the most selfies will win a gift card to a Rogers Park business. So shop small and post big!

Ten Good Reasons to Shop in Rogers Park
1. Protect Local Character and Prosperity
The 49th Ward is unlike any other community in the world. By choosing to support locally owned or locally operated businesses, you help maintain our diversity and distinctive flavor.
2. Community Well-Being
Locally owned businesses build strong neighborhoods by sustaining communities, linking neighbors, and by contributing more to local causes.
3. Local Decision Making
Local ownership means that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions.
4. Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy
Your dollars spent in locally-owned businesses have three times the impact on your community as dollars spent at national chains. When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more city services through sales tax, invest in neighborhood improvement and promote community development.
5. Job and Wages
Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do.
7. Public Benefits and Costs
Local stores in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services relative to big box stores and strip shopping malls.
8. Environmental Sustainability
Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centers-which in turn are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.
10. Product Diversity
A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based, not on a national sales plan, but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices. Can’t find what you need? Ask them to start carrying it! Your local retailer wants you to come back.
