Below are two exciting events taking place this weekend:
I’m pleased to announce a new neighbor on Morse Avenue–the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society! Please join me for the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening of their new home at 1447 W. Morse (southeast corner of Morse and Greenview) on Sunday, December 12th, 12 Noon.
The Historical Society moved from Western Avenue to the more visible location in order to make the history of the Rogers Park and West Ridge neighborhoods more accessible to the people who live and work here. In an attempt to make this history come alive to visitors of all ages, they created exhibits that include a variety of storytelling “tools.”

You may recall I have been working with the Historical Society to locate in the old Rogers Park firehouse at 1723 W. Greenleaf. I had reached an agreement with the City of Chicago Department of Planning (now Department of Community Development) to donate the old firehouse to the Historical Society and hosted acommunity meeting on the proposed agreement in July 2009.
Unfortunately, as the economy continued to fail, the City reneged on the agreement and stated its intention to sell the firehouse on the open market. I have put a “hold” on the sale until the new mayor takes office. I’m hoping the new mayor will agree to honor the City’s original agreement.
In the meantime, I’m thrilled the Historical Society is locating on Morse Avenue in a highly visible location with dynamic exhibits. Their presence on Morse is another step in the continuing rebirth of this great and historic Rogers Park Street.
Kick off your weekend right by joining me for another of my popular “Follow Me on Friday” events thisFriday, December 10th, 5-7 p.m., at Duke’s Bar-Rogers Park, 6920 N. Glenwood (just south of Morse) in the heart of the popular Glenwood Avenue Arts District. It’s a cozy, unpretentious with extremely friendly bartenders and a great neighborhood vibe. Come in and say hello to the owners, Mary and Neil, and enjoy a complimentary beer or wine and a free bite to eat. It’s open to folks who follow me on Facebook or bring a copy of this e-mail.
“Follow Me on Friday” is one of my efforts to encourage my constituents to sample some of the 49th Ward’s finest restaurants and pubs. Each week on my Facebook page, I post the name and location of a local restaurant or pub where I’ll be hanging out after work on Friday. The establishment offers specials for all my Facebook followers and their friends. It’s a great opportunity for you to check out one of the fine local 49th Ward businesses you may not havebeen to before.
