The City’s Department of Streets and Sanitation is extending its residential street sweeping program until Friday, December 8th, weather permitting. This means the 49th Ward’s street sweeper will continue clearing away the fall leaves and debris from residential streets in the ward, assuming we do not experience any snowfall.
The Chicago street sweeping season typically ends each year just before Thanksgiving. However, “the combination of a wet spring, a dry end to summer, warm fall temperatures and a wet October have resulted in many trees retaining their leaves longer than usual,” the Chicago Tribune reported recently. This prompted the Mayor and Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Charles Williams to keep the street sweepers on the streets an additional three weeks.
The street sweeper will finish sweeping the ward north of Touhy Avenue this Monday, November 20. Assuming it doesn’t snow the next three weeks, the extended schedule will enable the sweeper to sweep the entire ward south of Touhy by December 8th, as well as a small portion of the ward north of Touhy that was missed when it snowed last Friday.
Be on the lookout for street sweeping signs restricting parking on your block.

Please note: The street sweeper cannot operate in the snow. If snow accumulates on the streets on any given day, the streets will not be swept that day.
After December 8th, the Department of Streets and Sanitation will transition into its winter mobilization. Regularly scheduled street sweeping will resume on April 2nd next year.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope it doesn’t snow in the next three weeks!
