Don’t forget to join my wife Barbara and me for the grand (or little) opening of our Little Free Library TOMORROW (Saturday, June 4th), from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, in the front yard of our home at 1431 W. Fargo (just west of Sheridan Road).
We’ll have cookies and lemonade for the kids and coffee for the adults. Kids will have the opportunity to make their own bookmarks and get a chance to draw on our sidewalks with colorful chalk. We’ll also have face painters and a kids book exchange. Best of all, Barbara will offer personalized tours of her backyard fairy gardens!
Barbara is an avid reader. And she enjoys encouraging children to develop that same love of reading. When she learned about Little Free Libraries, she fell in love with the idea.
Little Free Libraries are simple structures that can bring neighbors together, and encourage readers of all ages. But Barbara especially loved the idea of small, approachable libraries where neighbors might leave not just a book, but a note about why they liked a book, or what it meant to them as a child, as a means of inspiring young readers. Every kid loves finding a special cache.
So Barbara went out and obtained a little book house at a charity auction. With the help of our friend, Anni Zuckert, who painted the book house, and Barbara’s brother, Rick Sepanik, who mounted the house on a post, we now have a Little Free Library in our front yard (see photo at right)!
We hope you and your family can join us for family friendly Saturday morning!
