I have some promising developments to report on our efforts to secure a new grocery store for the shuttered Dominick’s at Gateway Center. A sophisticated grocer has expressed strong interest in the Gateway site and has entered into negotiations to lease the space.
I’ve worked closely with Deputy Mayor Steve Koch, who chairs Mayor Emanuel’s Grocery Store Task Force, to identify the grocer and convince them to take a look at the site. I’ve spoken with other grocers who have also expressed strong interest in the Gateway store and I understand preliminary discussions have taken place with at least one or two of them.
These negotiations are in the very early stages and it is by no means guaranteed that they will reach a successful conclusion. Because they are so preliminary, I hesitate to raise expectations needlessly. However, many residents in the community have asked me about the status of the search for a new grocer and I wanted to let you know that the Mayor’s Task Force, of which I am a member, is making every effort to find a suitable grocer for the site and that these efforts are beginning to bear some fruit.
Please understand these negotiations are at a very sensitive stage and for that reason, I cannot divulge the identity of the grocer. If the negotiations reach a successful conclusion, I will identify the grocer immediately. Be advised that it may take as long as 90 days before the outcome of the negotiations is determined. Even if the negotiations are not successful, I’m still very confident that a new grocer will be identified for the site.
In the meantime, I am pleased to report that Whole Foods has announced they will open new stores in four shuttered Dominick’s locations, including the store at 6009 N. Broadway in Edgewater (see photo on left, courtesy of DNAinfo). Though the Broadway store is not located in the 49th Ward, this is good news for our neighborhood, especially for those who live in the south end of the Ward.
Below is a list of the 21 Dominick’s locations in the City, or within one mile of the City, and their current status (those for which no grocer has been identified are in bold):
