You may have heard or read in the news media that a shooting took place yesterday afternoon in Evanston, just north of Howard. Evanston Police Chief Richard Eddington and 24th Police District Commander Roberto Nieves provided me the following update.
At approximately 3:30 p.m. yesterday (Thursday), three men sitting in a red SUV on Custer Street in Evanston, one-half block north of Howard, were struck by bullets fired from a vehicle that stopped alongside them. The victims then drove their SUV across Howard and struck a concrete planter box on Damen just south of Howard.
Emergency crews arrived quickly at the scene and all three passengers in the red SUV were taken to St. Francis Hospital.
One of the passengers was treated and released. Two other passengers remain hospitalized. One is listed in critical, but stable, condition. The other passenger is listed in serious condition.
An Evanston street gang claimed credit on social media for the shooting. All three victims allegedly are members of a Chicago street gang.
Both Evanston and Chicago police have stepped up patrols in the area and Commander Nieves asked for additional Gang Crime Unit officers.
I will provide you with additional information as it becomes available.
