Police are investigating a shooting that occurred yesterday (Wednesday) in the parking lot of the McDonald’s at Pratt Blvd. and Clark St. A 17-year-old was killed and three other teenagers–a 15 year-old girl and two 18-year-old boys–were wounded in the incident, which occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m.
According to 24th District Police Commander Thomas Waldera, a masked gunman walked up to the teens in the parking lot and opened fire. The victims had a verbal fight with several other people outside the McDonald’s just before the shooting. The wounded teens are expected to survive.
Police are examining video from nearby security cameras in an attempt to identify the assailant.
Sullivan High School is nearby, but according to Commander Waldera, none of the victims were Sullivan High School students.
The owner of the McDonald’s told me he occasionally has had problems with rowdy young people in the restaurant after school dismissal time, but nothing approaching yesterday’s incident. Commander Waldera confirmed the McDonald’s has experienced some minor incidents from time to time, but that the restaurant has not been a source of major problems.
Nonetheless, the owner has agreed to close the restaurant seating area from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. for the next few days. The Commander will have his forces conduct a “site analysis” of the restaurant today to offer suggestions on security camera placement and other additional safety measures. The owner has agreed to abide by the recommendations.
Commander Waldera told me it is not clear at this time whether the incident is gang related, but he does not believe it is related to the ongoing dispute between the LOC City and Insane Cutthroats gangs. The Commander also confirmed an uptick in Latin King graffiti in the area, but does not believe the shooting was linked to that gang.
The Commander said he is devoting all his available resources to patrolling the immediate area.
I will keep you informed of any developments in the investigation. In the meantime,I urge you to attend the next CAPS meeting in your area. The next CAPS meeting for Beat 2432, which is the beat where the shooting occurred, is onThursday, February 20th, 7:00 p.m., at the 24th District Police Station auditorium, 6464 N. Clark.
The beat meeting is one of the most important intelligence gathering venues. It’s where the police officers and community residents meet to share information, discuss ongoing concerns and develop strategies to combat those concerns. My office is always represented at these meetings and Commander Waldera almost always attends, as well.
