I’m happy to report the results ofyesterday’s vote on the proposed playgrounds at Paschen Park(right) and Matanky Park (below). Parents, kids and other community residents were asked to vote for their favorite playground designs for each park.
The votes were held at two separate meetings, including a meeting I held Saturday morning at Paschen Park. The Park District and I agreed to abide by the results of the plebiscite.

Those attending the meetings voted overwhelmingly for Design Option 1 for Paschen Park (right) and Design Option 2 for Matanky Park (below).
Rogers Park resident Rebecca Jansen-Weinberg, president of Baby Wranglers of East Rogers Park, who has played a critical role in securing community support for the new playgrounds, helped organized yesterday’s election.
Construction of the Paschen and Matanky playgrounds is scheduled to begin in the spring and will be completed by July 1st, weather permitting.
The playgrounds were selected through a community application process administered by Friends of the Parks, a park advocacy organization, dedicated to preserving, protecting, and improving Chicago’s parks.
I announced the initiative last March and urged neighbors to submit their favorite playground for consideration. In true Rogers Park fashion, the neighbors were enthusiastic and well-organized. As a result, every 49th Ward playground submitted for consideration was selected.
Lazarus Park, at 1257 W. Columbia is also slated for a new playground and a community meeting to review and vote on the proposed designs for the new Lazarus playground will take place in the next few weeks. The four playgrounds are in addition to a new playground at Touhy Park, which is funded through myParticipatory Budgeting process. Construction of the Touhy Park playground has begun and will be completed within the next few weeks.
By mid-summer next year, the 49th Ward will boast five brand new playgrounds!
