See the first place Loyola Ramblers at “49th Ward Night!”

January 30, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

Back by popular demand! Loyola University once again is offering deeply discounted tickets for 49th Ward residents and their families to a Loyola University Ramblers basketball game!

Join me for “49th Ward Night,” next Tuesday, February 5th, 6:00 p.m., as last year’s Cinderella team, the Ramblers take on their Missouri Valley Conference rivals, the Drake University Bulldogs, at Loyola’s Gentile Arena.

Earlier this month, Loyola University  hosted “49th Ward Community Day.” The game sold out in just a few hours. Loyola has graciously offered 49th Ward residents and their families a second chance at deeply-discounted tickets to watch the Ramblers pursue another NCAA tournament berth. [Read more…]

In case you haven’t heard, it’s cold outside. Open this for information on school closings, transit updates, etc.

January 29, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning effective until 12:00 noon on Thursday.

Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20-30 below zero are expected today and wind chills as low as 50-55 below zero are expected tonight through Thursday morning. The wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 5 minutes and there is an increased risk of hypothermia. Gusty winds and blowing snow could result in significantly reduced visibility and hazardous travel.

Governor Pritzker has declared a state of emergency.

49th Ward Staff Update: Ward “Supe-r” services; monthly CAPS meetings with police

January 25, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

With the cold and snow over this past week – and no let-up in sight – you can count on our office staff for help. Last weekend and all week our office staff has connected people with folks who can shovel snow at reasonable prices, while our Ward Superintendent Dan Murphy has been blowing snow, salting and reminding neighbors of their responsibility to keep sidewalks clear in front of their property.  Click here to complete a form requesting shoveling help.

In this weekly email, your Aldermanic Service Staff reviews what’s happening in the 49th Ward office and on the streets. Please reply to this email with your thoughts, and what you might like to see included in the future.

Eight new officers added to 24th Police District force

January 22, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

Eight new police officers are hitting the streets today in the 24th Police District to help make our community safer.  Five of the officers are new recruits who just graduated from the police academy and three are veteran officers transferred from other districts.

Residents to review proposed zoning change for Taste Food and Wine to allow sale of wine and beer by the glass

January 21, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

I invite you to attend a community meeting to review a proposed zoning change that would allow Taste Food and Wine, 1506 W. Jarvis, to serve wine and beer by the glass. The meeting will be held this Thursday, January 24th, 7:00 p.m., at my 49th Ward Service Office, 7356 N. Greenview.

Taste Food and Wine, 1506 W. Jarvis

Taste is a fine wine and cheese shop that also carries a selection of craft beers and premium spirits. Taste’s owners, Rogers Park residents Sandra Carter and Phoebe Rosenwald, plan to continue operating their store primarily as a retail business, but would like the option to serve wine and beer by the glass, along with small appetizers, such as cheese and charcuterie.

Here’s an update on City’s response to winter storm; Juneway Beach sculpture dedication postponed

January 19, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

The National Weather Service reports a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 12 noon today (Saturday).  As a result, the dedication of the new artistic sculpture in Juneway Beach Park, scheduled for this morning, is canceled and will be rescheduled at a future date.

A total of five to nine inches of snow is expected to fall by the storm’s end with winds gusting 30 to 35 miles per hour. Strong winds will result in blowing and drifting snow and could significantly reduce visibility, making travel very difficult. [Read more…]

49th Ward Staff Update: Housing advocacy, Target job fair a smash hit

January 18, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

Welcome to the first weekly email where your Aldermanic Service Staff reviews what’s happening in the 49th Ward office and on the streets.

We are listening to you. As we have been hosting satellite service offices and been out and about in the community, we have heard that while you love Alderman Joe’ Moore’s email blasts, you also would like to hear more about what our staff is doing for the community and some of the things that Joe is doing that perhaps don’t warrant a big stand-alone email. And so we are launching this email. [Read more…]
