Work crews are installing a new water main on the north side of Touhy Avenue from Western Avenue to Clark Street. The new 16-inch water main will replace a century-old main, portions of which were installed as long as 125 years ago.
They already have started the project in the 50th Ward portion of Touhy, from Western to Oakley Avenue, and soon will work their way east into the 49th Ward, which begins at Oakley. After the water main installation is completed, work crews will resurface the entire stretch of Touhy curb to curb, from Western to Clark.
I am told the Western-to-Clark leg of the project should be finished by the end of May, weather permitting.
Work crews will then turn their attention to the stretch of Touhy from Clark Street to Sheridan Road. City officials estimate water main installation work will begin on that portion of Touhy this summer and be completed by the fall and the road will be resurfaced curb to curb.
The new water main will make water service more reliable for residents, businesses, and firefighters, while reducing the need for costly and inconvenient repairs.

In addition, my office will distribute fliers door-to-door on Touhy to inform Touhy Avenue residents of any major developments they should be aware of.
Parking in the designated work areas will be restricted during work hours–generally 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Parking outside of those hours will be allowed , but you must move your car by the start of each workday. I have asked the contractor to limit parking restrictions to active construction sites and areas where equipment must be stored.
If you live on Touhy in the affected area, you will experience water service disruption when your property is connected to the new main. Notice will be posted 72 hours in advance of the work. Also be aware that you may experience emergency water shut-offs with little to no notice. However, the contractor will try to avoid that if at all possible.
I apologize in advance for the temporary inconveniences this project will entail, but at the end we will enjoy a brand new water main and a newly resurfaced Touhy Avenue.
