I have good news for those who often have a hard time finding on-street parking in Rogers Park. Tawani Enterprises has informed me that its new parking structure at 7331 N. Sheridan is now open for business.
Located at the southeast corner of Sheridan and Sherwin, and accessible off Sherwin, this 250-car structure offers a safe and secure alternative to parking your car on the city streets. For $125 a month, you can get a guaranteed space that is available to you any day at any time. The facility also offers affordable hourly and overnight rates, so you can also use the parking structure as a convenient back-up plan on those days or evenings when you are unable to find suitable on-street parking near your home.
The parking rates are as follows:
Length of Time Rate
0-30 minutes $1.00
30-60 minutes $2.00
1-2 hours $4.00
2-24 hours $8.00
5 p.m. to 2 a.m. $6.00
Monthly Rate $125.00
The facility will be managed by LAZ Parking, a professional parking management company with 2,100 locations nationwide, including Chicago’s Millennium Park garages.
The parking structure, and all of Tawani’s Rogers Park properties, will be patrolled by a security company during the overnight hours. Security cameras are in place throughout the structure and assistance call boxes, monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week, are located in the elevator lobby and each stairwell.
For the safety and convenience of the garage patrons, payment for parking will be made from parkers’ vehicles when they exit the garage. Payment can be made with a credit card or through the LAZ Parking phone application. Cash will not be accepted. This further enhances safety for parkers because they will never have to exit their cars or use cash to make a payment.
Services from Enterprise Rent-a-Car and Zipcar will be available in the garage in the near future and the garage even provides a charging station for electric cars (see photo on right) with more charging stations on the way.
As promised, Tawani provided a stunning addition to Sheridan Road. This is not your run-of-the-mill parking garage. The parking structure features a variety of the highest quality of materials including painted concrete, face brick and channel glass panels that contain over 60% recycled material. Thanks to community input during my planning process, Tawani provided approximately 5,000 square feet of green space at ground level and approximately 800 square feet of greenery on the roof deck.
Even those who don’t live in the immediate area will benefit from the structure. By taking up to 250 cars off the streets, the parking structure will have a “ripple effect” throughout our entire parking-starved neighborhood. The 250 cars parked in the structure means 250 less cars competing for spaces on our residential and arterial streets.
Many residents of our neighborhood do not own a car, either because they choose not to do so or simply cannot afford one. But many others are car owners. Unless they have the luxury of an off-street parking location to store their car, they often find themselves endlessly circling the neighborhood looking for a parking space. Or they remain stuck in their home at night, reluctant to give up their on-street parking space.
Providing those people with an easy and accessible location to store their car after a long day at work or after a late-night dinner with friends will add immeasurably to the quality of their life.
Regardless of whether or not you own a car, the structure will make it easier for all of us to accommodate guests from outside our neighborhood by providing them a convenient alternative to store their car while visiting.
In short, this new parking structure promises to make life a little bit easier for many Rogers Park residents.
