The New Field Elementary School Local School Council (LSC) this summer voted unanimously to name Assistant Principal Conrey Callahan as New Field’s new principal, replacing Principal Carlos Patiño, who resigned in June to take a position at a suburban school.
Ms. Callahan has served as New Field’s assistant principal since 2014. She officially started her new job on July 1.
New Field’s LSC evaluated the merits of 19 principal applicants before promoting Callahan. “Ms. Callahan brings a high level of energy to the position, and a deep commitment to and familiarity with our staff, parents, and 700 students,” said LSC Chair Annie Gill-Bloyer. Former Principal Patiño spoke strongly in favor of Ms. Callahan’s appointment.
In addition to serving three years as New Field’s assistant principal, Ms. Callahan took the lead on developing the school’s budget in the face of annually reduced state and district funding and coordinated the school’s bilingual and ESL programming and parent Bilingual Advisory Committee.
“I think the best leaders listen and learn from the people around them and use that information to guide decision-making,” Ms. Callahan said. She plans to prioritize improving interpersonal relationships and building a culture of trust at the school.
“A lot of the work we will engage in this coming year will center on improving the relationships, trust, culture and climate among staff members in the school.” Ms. Callahan said.
Ms. Callahan is also looking to capitalize on the resources of the surrounding Rogers Park community.
“The community really shapes who we are as a school, the services we offer, the classroom learning we provide, the supports we put in place for family and kids. I think a real strength of New Field is the community at large,” Ms. Callahan observed.
New Field Elemetary is a Level 1 pre-K through 4th grade neighborhood school. Students enjoy bilingual classes in Spanish and English.
“This is the only school I will ever work at,” Ms. Callahan said. “It stole my heart.”
Congratulations, Ms. Callahan, on your new job!
