Gale Math And Science Academy and its principal, Cassandra Washington, are hosting a “town hall meeting” to discuss the potential closing of the school. The meeting is taking place on Thursday, February 14th, 5:30 p.m., in the Gale School auditorium, 1631 W. Jonquil (at Ashland).
Craig Benes, Chief Area Officer of the Chicago Public Schools Ravenswood-Ridge Elementary Network, will attend to provide a report and answer your questions.
Gale is one of nearly 200 elementary schools that fall within the criteria for possible closing set forth in an interim reportof the Commission on School Utilization. The commission, appointed by Chicago Public Schools chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett to engage the community on the issue of closing schools, won’t issue its final recommendations on school closings until early March. I vehemently oppose any plan that would close Gale School and have expressed my strong opposition to Chicago Public School officials.
Unfortunately, Gale School scheduled the town hall meeting without first checking my availability. I will be out of town on a previously scheduled trip and will be unable to attend. However, my chief-of-staff, Betsy Vandercook, and my staff assistant, Wayne Frazier, will attend in my stead and will express publicly my opposition to closing Gale.
In the meantime, I will keep you informed as this issue develops.
