This is the latest in a series of emails to bring you up to date on the City’s progress in securing new grocers for the shuttered Dominick’s stores in our neighborhood.
First, some good news. Cermak Fresh Market has acquired the shuttered Dominick’s store at Ridge and Damen (see photo on right, courtesy of DNAinfo). Though an opening date has yet to be announced, I am told the store likely will open in about six months after a rehabilitation of the building’s interior is completed.
Though the store is physically located in the 50th Ward, it serves many residents who live in the western portion of the 49th Ward.
Of the 15 Dominick’s stores that were closed in the City of Chicago, nine are still accounted for, including the Dominick’s in Gateway Center.
As I announced last month, the Mayor appointed me to a 20-member Grocery Store Task Force consisting of industry experts and representatives of City departments, agencies and organized labor to identify potential new grocers for the shuttered Dominick’s stores. The task force has made the Gateway Dominick’s one of its three top priorities.
In response, the task force is engaging grocery store chains and independent operators with information about public resources that would facilitate their lease or acquisition of the properties. It is also working to ensure Safeway considers these issues and community needs as the company considers private offers for each location.
The task force is currently targeting about a dozen local and national grocers, each of which has the capacity to expand into one or more of the City locations. We’re making sure they recognize the buying power that’s represented in the communities, the public resources that are available, and how their investment would cater to the needs of area customers.
Though Jewel and Mariano’s have re-hired workers from some of the closed stores, the task force continues to monitor employment assistance being made available to former Dominick’s employees in conjunction with their union representatives and the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, which has provided a series of rapid response employment workshops.
