I was pleased to be joined Saturday by Mayor Emanuel, Chicago Park District Superintendent Mike Kellyand Baby Wranglers of East Rogers Park President Rebecca Weinberg in breaking ground on three new playgrounds in Rogers Park–Lazarus Park, 157 W. Columbia, Matanky Park, 6925 N. Ridge, and Paschen Park, 1932 W. Lunt.
In the photo below, Rebecca, Mayor Emanuel, Superintendent Kelly and I are joined by several Rogers Park young people in breaking ground at Paschen Park:
At the Lazarus Park groundbreaking, the Mayor and I took time out to have our photo taken with a local celebrity–Lazarus Park mascot Phippie the bulldog (see right).
The playgrounds were selected through a community application process administered by Friends of the Parks, a park advocacy organization, dedicated to preserving, protecting, and improving Chicago’s parks. I announced the initiative last March and urged neighbors to submit their favorite playground for consideration. In true Rogers Park fashion, the neighbors were enthusiastic and well-organized. As a result, every 49th Ward playground submitted for consideration was selected.
The four playgrounds are in addition to a new playground atTouhy Park, which is funded through my Participatory Budgeting process. Construction of the Touhy Park playground was completed late last year.
By this July, the 49th Ward will boast five new playgrounds!
