Start your summer off right with a wonderful family-oriented event–the 2nd Annual Pottawattomie Park Picnic in the Park!
Sponsored by the Pottawattomie Park Advisory Council, the Picnic in the Parktakes place Thursday, June 11th, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Pottawattomie Park, 7340 N. Rogers (just west of the Metra tracks).
The picnic will be chock full with all sorts of activities for the kids, such as face-painting, a coloring contest, hula-hoops, sidewalk chalk, and a multi-level bouncy castle with a slide! And my 49th Ward Service Office team will be giving away free helium-filled balloons!
At 6:30 p.m., Ben’s Bubble Show will regale you with an absolutely amazing, interactive bubble demonstration. A Navy Pier entertainer, who has been featured on ABC TV Channel 7 and WGN TV Channel 9 morning news programs, Ben creates huge bubbles that people of all ages love to chase, pop, or just stare at in awe. Some can be as big as a car! Their transient and delicate beauty elicit an awe inspiring sense of wonder. They have been called “silent fireworks”.
When the wind kicks up, Ben uses a special tool that creates hundreds of softball sized bubbles in a few seconds that he shoots at his audience. It’s a bubble blizzard. Throw in a little humor and some audience participation, and you get one-of-a-kind, visually delightful entertainment that’s sure to please young and old alike.
Bubbles and different types of wands will be on hand for the kids to experiment and create their own amazing works of art!
Of course food is an essential component of any picnic. Food trucks will be on hand to offer up some delicious offerings.
5411 Empanadas will provide gourmet authentic Argentinean delights, including Malbec beef, caramelized onion, and spinach and cheese. Jaime’s Tacos will offer Mexican fiesta tacos, plus the traditional picnic favorites–hotdogs and hamburgers.
Cap off your meal with something that is guaranteed to satisfy your sweet tooth. Chicago Cupcake will provide a sample of some of their decadent cupcakes, including bananas foster, turtle, and red velvet.
The food is not complimentary, but it is affordable.
At dusk (approximately 8:45 p.m.), we’ll settle down for a Movie in the Park. It’s a classic:Jurassic Park!
And when you get a chance, take a peek at the new playground equipment, which is about to be unveiled. Pottawattomie Park is one of ten 49th Ward parks getting a brand new playground!
All in all, it promises to be a wonderful evening in the park for kids of all ages.
