Real Power. A Stronger Community. Better Decisions. These are the results of participatory budgeting in the 49th Ward, the birthplace of “PB” in the United States, and these are the results of PB as it expands across the nation.
The 49th Ward’s success in participatory budgeting would not have been achieved without the active support and guidance of the Participatory Budgeting Project (PBP), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the goal of making participatory budgeting a part of the fabric of every governmental unit in the United States. It is why I hope you will include PBP in your giving this year.
Starting with the 49th Ward in 2009, PBP has worked with dozens of partners to engage 23,000 people in deciding how to spend $18 million on community improvements. Your support can take this movement to the next level.
You can amplify the impact of your donation by giving today on Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is an annual event to refocus the holiday season after Black Friday. It provides the chance to reconsider the meaning of giving while connecting us with others who are supporting good work.
I am proud to serve on the Board of PBP. This Giving Tuesday, the Board and major donors have pledged to match all individual gifts up to $5,000, so your gift today will be doubled!
You can help us continue building the power of people from Chicago to Long Beach to St. Louis to Montreal and elsewhere across North America by supporting the Participatory Budgeting Project. As a small non-profit organization, PBP depends on the support of individuals like you to expand and deepen its work.
PBP had amazing successes in our first five years, developing and expanding PB in Chicago, New York and Vallejo, California, and we’re now in talks with over 30 cities about launching new PB processes. Help us continue this transformative work bymaking a donation at whatever level you can afford–whether $20, $50, $100, $500, or $1,000. Every amount helps.
At PBP, individual donors help decide how donations are spent. If you donate, you’ll be invited to vote in our PB2 process in spring, 2015: last year donors voted to create an Organizing Toolkit, a free resource to make it easier for anyone to start a new PB process.
Also chosen and funded by PBP donors is our new updated video, a great way of introducing your friends to PBP. Why not share it with your family and friends, and ask them to join you in supporting this groundbreaking new movement for real democracy?
P.S. Please make a Giving Tuesday donation now by sending a check dated December 2nd to PBP, 388 Atlantic Ave., 2nd Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11217, or making a gift here today.
