Please join me for the open house launch of Sullivan High School’s Parent University campus. The open house takes place this Thursday, December 21st, 10:00 a.m., at Sullivan High School, 6631 N. Bosworth.
Parent University is a community collaborative led by Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to help parents become full partners in their children’s education. Parent University aims to increase parent involvement in the schools and empower parents to raise children who are successful in school and in life.
CPS partners with community agencies and organizations to offer free courses, family events and activities that will equip parents with new or additional skills, knowledge, resources and confidence.
Sullivan High School is home to the only Parent University on Chicago’s north side. Workshops will be held at Sullivan with a focus on mobilizing and developing strategies to assist parents with their child’s education.
Parent University will also offer parents opportunities to build their own academic capacity through GED classes, course offerings at the City Colleges of Chicago, and other support from community organization partners.
Research shows that a parent can increase his or her child’s academic success by becoming involved with their school and community. Parental involvement improves student morale, attitudes, and academic achievement across all subject areas.
Below is a sample of some of the other opportunities available through Parent University:
- The Kwan: A talk show designed to encourage parental engagement through a broadcast platform.
- P2P: Parent to Parent Magazine: Parents participate in a journalism class and develop a magazine by parents for parents in partnership with TrueStar Magazine.
- Side by Side 21st Century Learning Experience: An opportunity for a school to engage both parents and students in certain core competencies such as collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving that experts believe schools need to teach to help students thrive in today’s world.
- Digital Video Production: Parents learn about video production techniques and filmmaking.
