Join me for the first annual Great Chicago Fire Festival this Saturday, October 4th, 8:00 p.m., as we mark our City’s epic resurgence from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
This first-of-its-kind spectacle of fire will take place along the Chicago River, between State Street and Columbus Drive.Redmoon Theater, in partnership with theCity of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and the Chicago Park District, created this free event to unite Chicago’s neighborhoods and celebrate Chicago’s grit, greatness and renewal following one of the greatest tragedies our City ever experienced.
Highlights of the Spectacle will include fiery cauldrons lowered from the bridges and kayakers pulling fire buoys and prairie gardens. Three floating fire sculptures resembling pre-1871 homes will be set ablaze, each revealing a dramatic and symbolic interior core. The finale will feature a choreographed fireworks display and a moving tribute to Chicago’s neighborhoods.
As Chair of the City Council’s Committee on Special Events, Cultural Affairs and Recreation, I have been assured by the Chicago Fire Department that every measure has been taken to make sure all this fire is contained on the water and safe for spectators.
I hope you can make it to what will hopefully be the first of an annual event to bring Chicago neighborhoods together celebrating our City’s comeback from its most difficult time.
