Last month, I announced the good news that Jewel/Osco would fill the space at Gateway Center formerly occupied by Dominick’s Fine Foods, which closed all their Chicago area stores at the end of last year. Securing a new grocer at the shuttered Gateway location was a top priority of the Mayor Emanuel’s Grocery Store Task Force of which I was an active member.
I met two weeks ago with newly appointed Jewel President Shane Sampson, who assured me they plan to hire neighborhood residents for the new store with priority given to former Dominick’s employees who have not already secured positions at other Jewel stores or other grocers.
Mr. Sampson said the store is undergoing extensive interior renovations and should open by mid-summer, if not sooner.
I will let you know when a specific grand opening date is set.
