I am pleased to report that Jewel-Osco will open in the grocery store space formerly occupied by Dominick’s at Gateway Center. Though a formal opening date has yet to be announced, I am told the new Jewel could be up and running within the next 60 days.
This is the best possible news for our neighborhood. The Jewel-Osco chain is a well-established full service grocery store and serves people of all economic means, which makes it a perfect fit for our very diverse neighborhood. I couldn’t be more thrilled.
I’ve been a member of Mayor Emanuel’s Grocery Store Task Force, a 20-member committee consisting of industry experts and representatives of City departments, agencies and organized labor to identify potential new grocers for the City’s shuttered Dominick’s stores. The task force made the Gateway Dominick’s one of its three top priorities.
Deputy Mayor Steve Koch, who chaired the Task Force, played a pivotal role in convincing Jewel to consider the Gateway site. He and the other task force members knew it was important to my community and me that we secure a grocery store of Jewel’s caliber and broad appeal. As a result of the Task Force’s efforts, Jewel commenced negotiations with Dominick’s parent company, Safeway, Inc. The negotiations reached a speedy conclusion and resulted in a signed agreement last Friday.
I will let you know of the Grand Opening date as soon as I find out. In the meantime, let’s celebrate the good news!
