I am proud to sponsor an informational forum on the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, Illinois’ marriage equality law. The forum will take place Wednesday, January 15th, 7:00 p.m., at theLoyola Park Fieldhouse, 1230 W. Greenleaf (at the Lake) 2nd Floor.
Last November, Illinois became the 16th state to recognize same-sex marriages. The law goes into effect June 1st. Those attending the forum will be able to learn the nuts and bolts of the new law and how it interplays with federal marriage benefits.
Joining me will be Cook County Clerk David Orr, who heads up the office that administers marriage licenses in the County. Clerk Orr will outline the implementation of the new law and how couples can convert their civil unions into marriages.
Also joining me will be our state legislators, State Senator Heather Steans, who was the chief Senate sponsor of the marriage equality bill and State Representative Kelly Cassidy. Both of these courageous leaders played key leadership roles in passing this landmark legislation. They will talk about their work to enact the law and how it will affect couples throughout the state.
Finally, I’ll be joined by Ed Yohnka of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois (ACLU) one of the many organizations that advocated for marriage equality. He will discuss the continued hurdles for same sex couples and how their status will be recognized throughout the country.
Please join us to learn how this new law will affect you and/or the people you love and celebrate this milestone accomplishment while looking to the battles that lie ahead to make our state, city and neighborhood welcoming for all.
