I am writing to ask you to take an important grocery store satisfaction survey.
As you know, Dominick’s Finer Foods last year closed all of its Chicago area stores, including its store at the Gateway Shopping Center at Howard and Clark. I worked closely with Mayor Emanuel and his office to identify and recruit a replacement for the Gateway store. As a result,Jewel/Osco will open a full-service supermarket at Gateway this summer andcurrently is hiring people to work at the store.
During the search for a new grocer for Gateway, I met with Mari Gallagher, who heads a research firm that specializes in food access and grocery assessments. Those of you who are long-time Rogers Park residents may recall that Mari was once the Executive Director of DevCorp North, the community development organization now known as the Rogers Park Business Alliance.
Mari’s firm was in the process of conducting a survey on food and grocery needs in other City neighborhoods and she agreed to add Rogers Park to her survey to inform our work. Though we have since successfully recruited Jewel to our community, I still believe Mari’s survey will provide us with important information to assess the grocery needs of the community and ensure that everyone in Rogers Park has access to a full range of healthy food choices.
