In our continuing effort to raise public awareness about our fragile environment, my 49th Ward Green Corpshas joined forces with Loyola University’s Center for Environmental and Urban Research and Policy to sponsor “Sustainability Series: Green Talk” a series of book and film programs to explore issues of sustainability with an emphasis on food production and water. Tuition for each program is $20, or $49 for the entire three-program series. The tuition cost includes refreshments.
The series kicks off on Thursday, September 23rd, 7:00 p.m., with a screening of the film, “Food Inc.” at theNew 400 Theaters, 6746 N. Sheridan (at Columbia), followed by a discussion at the Heartland Cafe, 7000 N. Glenwood (at Lunt), at 8:45 p.m. This controversial film discusses whether our nation’s centralized food processes are agriculturally sustainable. Join us as we deliberate the larger issues of food production and distribution. If you wish to view the film only, admission is $6.

“Follow Me on Friday” is one of my efforts to encourage you to sample some of the 49th Ward’s finest restaurants and pubs. Each week on my Facebook page, I will post the name and location of a local restaurant or pub where I’ll be hanging out after work on Friday. The establishment will offer specials for all my Facebook followers and their friends. It’s a great opportunity for you to check out one of the fine local 49th Ward businesses you may not havebeen to before.
Previous “Follow Me on Friday” locations include Mullen’s Bar and Grill at 7301 N. Western, RoPa Restaurant and Wine Bar at 1146 W. Pratt, the Act One Cafe, 1330 W. Morse, the Ethiopian Diamond II, 7537 N. Clark, and the Waterfront Cafe, 6219 N. Sheridan.
