Follow Me on Friday, this Friday, May 22nd, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., as I welcome a new store that is a perfect fit for Rogers Park–True Nature Foods at the Heartland Cafe, 7000 N. Glenwood (at Lunt).
Heartland Cafe owner, Tom Rosenfeld, will introduce you to his new business partner, True Nature Foods owner Paula Campanio(see photo on right, courtesy of Ben Woodard/DNAinfo), and offer up complimentary chips and homemade salsa, hummus, and other delicious appetizers, as well as samples of juice and smoothies. A complimentary glass of beer or wine will also be provided for those who wish for something a little harder.
An official ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 6:00 p.m.
True Nature Foods had been operating successfully as an organic grocery shop on Broadway in Edgewater for many years, but the specter of a new Whole Foods opening across the street from her store led Paula to begin discussions with Tom about a possible merger of their two enterprises.
The result of those discussions is Chicago’s first “grocestaurant.”The new restaurant, bar and store will offer the best of both the Heartland Café and True Nature Foods. The menu will continue to feature popular items from the Heartland, such as buffalo chili and the “Panhandler Breakfast” and will now include True Nature Foods favorites including Arize Kombucha on tap and organic Karma juice.
“We want to create a food hub for the north side of Chicago,” says Paula. The enterprise will be fueled in the growing season by Earth First Farms, Tom’s organic farm in Michigan.
“It will be so amazing to have two thriving businesses in Rogers Park, powered by a farmer-driven business model,” Paula exclaims. “It will be a place where people can shop, collect their CSA, eat, listen to music and enjoy a local beer,” Tom adds.
True Nature Foods at the Heartland Café will be a full natural food grocery store and feature True Nature’s famous all-organic juice bar in the new space. The organic shop will be located in the area that used to be the Heartland’s main dining area.
The dining area will be moved to the Buffalo Bar and the space that once was the Heartland’s gift shop. The restaurant potion of the new enterprise will seat 60 and continue to host events such as Opera on Tap, In One Ear open mic nights and the weekly Live from The Heartland radio show.
Co-ops/CSAs available at True Nature Foods at Heartland Café will include Earth First Farms Apple CSA, Collective Resources compost co-op, Triple S Meat Co-op and Farmer Tom’s Produce Buying Club.
“We are really excited to combine two of the north side’s most progressive food businesses,” says Tom. “This is more than farm-to-table, it is farmers growing specifically for, and in concert with, a restaurant and a grocery store,” he adds.
Please join me this Friday and check out this very Rogers Park-like business venture.
