Celebrate the holiday season and Follow Me on Friday to the Heartland Cafe Bar, 7006 N. Glenwood, this Friday, December 15th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. I will be joining the Rogers Park Business Alliance (RPBA) in a “symbolic ribbon cutting” of the latest artistic additions to the Mile of Murals Project.
Check out the newly renovated and historic Heartland Cafe Bar located on Glenwood just north of Lunt, enjoy some complimentary food and drinks, and meet the mural artists to learn about their process and inspiration.
Formerly known as the Red Line Tap, the Heartland Cafe Bar combines the cutting-edge live entertainment experience of the Red Line Tap with the delicious wholesome food of the Heartland Cafe, located just around the corner. The remodeled space reflects what the Heartland name represents–a welcoming place for gathering, drinking and dining and a venue to experience the full range of music and performance art.
The Heartland Cafe Bar offers an array of Chicago-focused brews and craft spirits and a dining experience that includes the full Heartland Café menu. The bar will be unveiling their new space for this Mile of Murals special occasion.
At around 6:00 p.m. we’ll “cut the ribbon” on the two latest additions to the Mile of Murals Project. RPBA launched the Mile of Murals project in 2007 as an effort to promote the Glenwood Avenue Arts District. When completed, the project will showcase 19 large-scale murals on ten block-long walls, seven viaduct walls and two overpasses painted by local, national and international mural artists.
Due to the winter weather and the distance between each mural, Friday’s ribbon cutting will be symbolic in that it will not take place at the murals themselves.
Instead, slides of the finished murals will be shown inside the Heartland Cafe Bar.
The featured murals for this event include “Resilience,” located on the north side of the Pratt Boulevard CTA viaduct, and “Be Happy,” located on the southeast corner of Glenwood and Estes.
Resilience, painted by artist Gretchen Hasse with the assistance of artists Jason Schroeder, Dalia Carrillo and Cesar Moyorido, is a mural bursting with images showcasing the perseverance of the human spirit. Gretchen says she chose the word “Resilience” because “it speaks to the strength of the Rogers Park community, where I have been fortunate to locate much of my own art practice. Rogers Park is vital and diverse, and it’s still a place where strangers talk to each other.”
Be Happy is a collaboration between local artists from the Roman Susan Art Foundation and Rogers Park resident, businessman and collage artist Tae “Thomas” Kong, owner of Kim’s Corner Foods. The mural was designed by Mr. Kong and painted by artists Kristin Abhalter, Steven Husby, Dan Miller, Cole Pierce, Kit Rosenberg, Ruby T and Alice Tippit, with assistance from Max Guy, Maika Saworski and Nathan Smith from the Roman Susan Art Foundation.
According to the foundation, “‘Be Happy’ is an instructional phrase found throughout the artwork. This message embodies the artist Tae Kong’s personal work ethic — an active, creative engagement with daily life. Thomas Kong is one of the most prolific and generous artists in Rogers Park, and we are very happy to have worked with him to bring this artwork to life.”
Please join me for some holiday cheer as we support a long-established neighborhood business and welcome two new artistic murals to Rogers Park!
Follow Me on Friday is one of my efforts to encourage my constituents to sample some of the 49th Ward’s finest restaurants, pubs, businesses and festivals. About once or twice a month on my Facebook page, I post the name and location of a local restaurant, pub, business or festival where I’ll be hanging out after work on Friday. The establishment offers specials for all my Facebook followers and their friends. It’s a great opportunity for you to check out one of the fine local 49th Ward businesses you may not have visited before.
