Follow me on Friday as I join Loyola University Interim President John Pelissero to cut the ribbon at the headquarters of Lake Shore Community Partners, an innovative partnership between Loyola and the Rogers Park/Edgewater community. The event takes place at 5 p.m. this Friday, April 8th, at the Granada Center, 6443 N. Sheridan (just north of Devon).
After the event, join us for a night of exciting collegiate volleyball, as the reigning two-time NCAA champion Loyola Ramblers men’s volleyball team take on the IPFW Mastodons at 7:00 p.m. at nearby Gentile Arena. Loyola is offering complimentary tickets to the game for everyone who attends the Follow Me on Friday event.
As I announced last month, I’ve been working with Loyola and community leaders to identify four priority areas for community improvement. Partners for Education SCHOOLS 2020 will broaden and deepen the role that Loyola and community activists plays in improving all of the neighborhood public schools in Rogers Park. Partners for Business RogersEdge will recruit and sustain a thriving business environment in southeast Rogers Park along Devon Avenue and Sheridan Road. Partners for Safety will deepen the relationship between the University police and the 24th District to address issues of security for students, residents, and commuters. And, Partners for Health Loyola Family and Community Health Center will try to mitigate the devastating impact of state budget cuts to mental health services by providing affordable services to low income individuals and families at Loyola’s new Community Health Center.
All of these efforts will be run out of the Lake Shore Community Partners office.
As part of the Partners for Business initiative, Loyola recruited Third Coast Comics and Local Goods Chicago to open “pop ups” at the partnership office on Sheridan Road. Third Coast is the only minority owned comic book store currently operating in the Midwest and Local Goods Chicago showcases artisanal gift items handmade in Chicago. The shops will be open for Friday night’s Follow Me event so please come and show your support for the small local economy.
“Follow Me on Friday” is one of my efforts to encourage my constituents to sample some of the 49th Ward’s finest restaurants, pubs and businesses. About once or twice a month on my Facebook page, I post the name and location of a local restaurant, pub or business where I’ll be hanging out after work on Friday. The establishment offers specials for all my Facebook followers and their friends. It’s a great opportunity for you to check out one of the fine local 49th Ward businesses you may not have visited before.
