Bring your appetite and “Follow Me on Friday,” this Friday, May 31st, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., to Den Den Restaurant, 6635 N. Clark (at Wallen). I’ve featured many a great restaurant since I began my Follow Me on Friday series nearly three years ago, but few have put on the kind of spread that Micheal, the owner of Den Den Restaurant, plans to provide my guests.
Den Den is Chicago’s only Eritrean restaurant. Located in the Horn of Africa, Eritrea gained its independence from Ethiopia in 1993. Though Eritrean cuisine is similar to Ethiopian cuisine, it has its own unique flavors and characteristics. Eritrea features more Ottoman and Italian influences than are present in Ethiopian cooking, including more pasta specials and greater use of curry powders and cumin.
Den Den is known for its savory vegetables, beef, lamb and chicken dishes, which can be served communally atop Injera bread. Crowd favorites are the spicy lentils and spiced vegetables. To drink, there’s also flavorful coffee or spiced hot tea.
Contributors to Yelp give Den Den consistently outstanding reviews. In keeping with the Eritrean custom of extreme hospitality, Micheal the other day provided me a list of the generous food offerings he plans to provide this Friday. In keeping with the Follow Me on Friday practice, he also plans to provide a complimentary beer, wine or soft drink.
Below is the amazing spread Micheal intends to provide for our Follow Me on Friday:
-Alicha Siga-Beef meat chunks cooked with onions, veggies, carrots, and potatoes with spicy curry.
-Spicy Zighni-Beef meat cooked with onions and garlic in extra or mild hot spicy stew.
-Zighni Begi’e- Tender lamb chops cooked with hot pepper sauce and spicy butter.
-Alicha Begie- Tender lamb shops cooked in mild sauce flavored with curry, garlic, onions, & veggies.
-Alicha Derho- Chicken pieces gently cooked with onions, potatoes, carrots, flavored, and with special herbal spices.
-Tibsi Derho-White boneless chicken pieces, stir fried with onion, peppers, and tomatoes, seasoned, and simmered with special herbal spices.

“Follow Me on Friday” is one of my efforts to encourage my constituents to sample some of the 49th Ward’s finest restaurants, pubs and businesses. Each week on my Facebook page, I post the name and location of a local restaurant, pub or business where I’ll be hanging out after work on Friday. The establishment offers specials for all my Facebook followers and their friends. It’s a great opportunity for you to check out one of the fine local 49th Ward businesses you may not have visited before.
