I’m writing to invite you to two events I’m hosting related to the Glenwood Sunday Market. You’re welcome to attend either or both of these fun events, regardless of whether you’re a weekly Sunday Market attendee or don’t know a rutabaga from a turnip.
If you’ve been “following me on Friday” for the last two years, you know these popular events are a great way to promote local business enterprises and build a sense of community in Rogers Park and the 49th Ward.
Join us this Friday, August 10th, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the backyard of my home at 1431 W. Fargo. Barb and I will be offering up free food, beer, wine and soft drinks. In return we ask you to make a $20 donation to support the work of the Glenwood Sunday Market. Donations will be collected at the door.
The Glenwood Sunday Market is devoted to providing local, sustainable and, whenever possible, organic foods. Composed entirely of farmers and food artisans who work within 200 miles of Rogers Park, the market operates year round. The Summer Market is held every Sunday from June through October, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Glenwood between Morse and Lunt; winter markets are held indoors once or twice a month from November through May.
Our Follow Me on Friday event is one of several “Summer Soiree” parties that are being held by neighborhood residents throughout the summer to benefit the market. These events will culminate in theGlenwood Sunday Market “Summer Soiree Street Dance” on Sunday August 26th, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Glenwood between Morse and Lunt. If you attend my Follow Me on Friday event this week, you’ll be able to attend the Summer Soiree Street Dance FREE OF CHARGE!
In addition to enjoying our complimentary food and beverages, you’ll have an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for some great prizes, including gift certificates to some of your favorite venues:
Finally Here Salon
Museum of Science & Industry
Pillars Social Cafe
Rogers Park Fine Wines and Liquor
Taste Food & Wine
Other raffle prizes include a gift pack of Aveda products, a gift basket of Avon products, an Edgewater’s Cooking cookbook a family membership to the Chicago Historical Society, VIP treatment at Tru Restaurant, and a “fairy garden” designed by the one and only Barbara Moore (if you want to find out what a fairy garden is, visit our home on Friday).
The raffle drawing will be held at the Summer Soiree Street Dance on August 26th.
If you want to help the Glenwood Sunday Market grow and thrive, it’s not too late to host a Summer Soiree party of your own. For more information, read the flier below:
I’ll have recovered from my Follow Me on Friday party just in time to host another fun and much-anticipated community event–the 4th Annual 49TH WARD COMMUNITY BICYCLE RIDE. The event kicks off thisSunday, August 12th, 7:30 a.m., at the 49th Ward Service Office, 7356 N. Greenview (at Jarvis).
Enjoy a light breakfast snack compliments of 7-Eleven. I’ll lead an hour-long bicycle tour of the 49th Ward with a safety escort provided by the City of Chicago’s Bicycling Ambassadors. This year, we’ll spend a portion of our time biking through the southern part of Rogers Park that will soon join the 49th Ward under the new ward map. For everyone’s safety, we ask that all bike riders be at least 16 years of age.
We’ll conclude our ride at the Glenwood Sunday Market at Morse and Glenwood for the Market’s annualBike and Wellness Day. Bicycle parking will be available at the corner of Morse and Glenwood.
In addition to the delicious fresh produce and foods normally available at the Glenwood Sunday Market, Bike and Wellness day will extend an additional block further (south to Farwell) and include vendors and presenters with information and products for cyclists as well as anyone interested in having better health.
Bicycle presenters will include Loyola Limited’s Chainlinks, The Recyclery (accepting all used bicycle donations), the City of Chicago’s Bicycling Ambassadors, and performer Adam Gottlieb playing songs inspired by bicycles. Wellness vendors will include Heartland Health Centers, Caring Connections for Seniors, Ardent Center for Counseling, and Center on Halsted.
Whether you’re a hardcore bicycling enthusiast, or simply want to spend a nice summer morning riding your bike through the neighborhood, this is the place to be.
I am proud to have the 49th Ward Green Corps as one of the sponsors of Bike Day. Our goal of transforming the 49th Ward into the greenest community in the nation can only be accomplished by making our community more bike-friendly.
Please download a copy of the Bike Day poster to share with your building residents, congregation, and co-workers. The pdf is provided below:
I look forward to seeing you Sunday morning the 12th!
