With winter continuing to bear down on us, Follow Me on Friday to Devon Avenue to visit two unique businesses––one that just recently opened and one that is celebrating its fifth anniversary.
The gathering starts at Pho Spicier Thai Cuisine, which opened just a few months ago, replacing the Thai Spice Restaurant. Restaurant manager Mally Zeed will offer a variety of Thai dishes to sample, including rice, noodles and curry dishes. Cool down the spice with complementary beverages of beer, wine or soft drinks served by my staff.
The watchword here is spice. Pho’s is an authentic Thai restaurant for people who want to eat hot and spicy in Thai style. They cook their food fresh to order in vegetable oyster sauce, brown sugar, light soy sauce, sea salt and vegetable oil, with no MSG added. Vegetarians are welcome!
When ordering off the menu, you can ask for one of five different levels of spice: mild, mild-plus, medium (which is quite hot), hot or extra hot.
The Devon restaurant is their third location. They are open seven days per week, from 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
I urge you to try one of the lunch specials they offer daily.
After enjoying the delicious Thai food, walk next door to Audio Archaeology and enjoy a little desert, featuring a sampling of catered sweet treats, while exploring this unique business that is celebrating its fifth anniversary in Rogers Park.
Owner John Arnsdorf finds unique, well-preserved console stereos, turntables, and record players and returns them to glory. They are remarkable both for their beauty and the rich, warm sound and power they deliver. Not only are they one-of-a-kind conversation pieces, they are amazing sounding devices. Most will even play MP3s from your portable device or phone.
In addition to consoles, John offers a well-curated selection of new and vintage records (he even has 45’s), a groovy mix of mid-century housewares, locally-made candles by Rocketrelics.com, and a friendly cat (“Detective Mittens”). He also offers thousands of replacement needles for new and vintage record players and turntables. If John doesn’t have it, he can find it!
John’s business is a labor of love. He grew up combing thrift shops and record stores looking for 78s and he started tinkering with radios, record players and other electronics to see how they worked. Ultimately, the business is, as John says, “a culmination of collecting, decorating and tinkering.”
John is a genuinely nice person, a solid businessman and I really enjoy the way John and his staff presents the store to the community. I urge you to shop there for all of your vinyl needs.
Follow Me on Friday is one of my efforts to encourage my constituents to sample some of the 49th Ward’s finest restaurants, pubs, businesses and festivals. About once or twice a month on my Facebook page, I post the name and location of a local restaurant, pub, business or festival where I’ll be hanging out after work on Friday. The establishment offers specials for all my Facebook followers and their friends. It’s a great opportunity for you to check out one of the fine local 49th Ward businesses you may not have visited before.
