Enjoy summer-like weather and help spruce up the neighborhood at the 28th annual 49th Ward Spring Clean-up. Join hundreds of your neighbors as we fan out across the neighborhood, picking up trash, cutting down weeds and planting flowers.
At lunchtime, we’ll return to my office for a sumptuous “Taste of the 49th Ward,” featuring food from around the world donated by a vast array of 49th Ward restaurants and guaranteed to satisfy every culinary taste (see photo below).
Tomorrow’s Spring Clean-up promises to be the warmest on record. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s.
I can’t think of a better way to spend a warm spring morning than to join your neighbors in beautifying the neighborhood!
In an effort to make the event as sustainable as possible, this year’s Taste of the 49th Ward buffet will go zero-waste. We will provide reusable silverware and water bottle refill stations to reduce single-use items. Compost will be provided by Urban Canopy’s Compost Club, the same organization that my office uses to compost food scraps in our kitchen, and everything else will be completely recyclable.
As part of the 49th Ward Spring Clean-up, volunteers will be planting erosion-controlling marram grass at Leone Beach Park (Touhy and the lake).
Come by yourself or with a group! We’ll supply shovels, rakes, brooms and garbage bags.
This is a wonderful time for block clubs, condominium associations, church groups, and lots of other organizations to come together with individual members of the community to help get the ward ready for the spring and summer. Bring the kids!
I hope to see you tomorrow morning at 9:00!
