Community Meeting on Expansion of Divvy Bike Share and Proposed New Bike Routes

April 11, 2014

Dear Neighbor,

I invite you to attend a community meeting on biking in the 49th Ward. Community residents and I have been working with the City of Chicago’s Department of Transportation (CDOT) on an expansion of the Divvy Bike Sharing program to the 49th Ward and the addition of new bike routes to the ward.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, April 17, 7:00 p.m., at the Field School auditorium, 7019 N. Ashland(between Lunt and Greenleaf). Enter through the Lunt entrance on the south side of the building.

Divvy bike sharing was introduced last year to downtown Chicago and many of the close-in neighborhoods. It has been tremendously popular with long-time cyclists, as well as two-wheeled novices. Since its launch, Divvy has enrolled over 11,000 annual members, and logged more than 725,000 trips.

Building on the success of the program, CDOT in December announced plans to add 175 stations throughout the City this year, soliciting recommendations on locations from bicyclists and community residents.  Based on the input it received, CDOT developed a proposal for seven new bike stations in the 49th Ward. Though the current proposed expansion reaches only to Touhy Avenue, CDOT plans to install additional stations north of Touhy in the near future.

CDOT proposes stations at the following 49th Ward locations:

  • Southeast corner of Ridge and Touhy
  • Southeast corner of Clark and Touhy
  • Northeast corner of Sheridan and Touhy
  • Southeast corner of Clark and Lunt (just east of the Rogers Park Metra station)
  • Northeast corner of Glenwood and Morse (just east of the Morse “L” station)
  • Northeast corner of Clark and Columbia
  • Southwest corner of Sheridan and Albion (just north of the Loyola “L” station)

Below are the proposed locations highlighted on a map. The blue dots indicate the 49th Ward locations and the red dots indicate the locations proposed in the adjacent wards:

Please note, I have asked CDOT to explore the possibility of moving the station proposed for Touhy and Sheridan to the corner of Greenleaf and Sheridan so that it is closer to the Loyola Park Fieldhouse and the most utilized portion of Loyola Park.

CDOT will also present a proposed north-south bike route that will give cyclists a clear route through the 49th Ward connecting Evanston and Edgewater. This would be in addition to the bike improvements approved though my Participatory Budgeting process that will result in shared bike lanes on Clark Street and Pratt Boulevard.

Below is a map that highlights the proposed northbound route:

The proposed northbound route would take bicyclists on the following path through the ward:

  • North on Glenwood from Devon to Pratt
  • West on Pratt to Greenview
  • North on Greenview to Jonquil
  • West on Jonquil to Haskins
  • Northwest on Haskins to Juneway
  • West on Juneway to Chicago Avenue in Evanston

Below is a map that highlights the proposed southbound route:

The proposed southbound route would take bicyclists on the following path through the ward:

  • East on Juneway from Chicago Avenue in Evanston to Marshfield
  • South on Marshfield to Jonquil
  • East on Jonquil to Greenview
  • South on Greenview to Morse
  • East on Morse to Glenwood
  • South on Glenwood to Devon

I urge you to attend the meeting to provide your input on both the Divvy Bike station and bike route proposals. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please feel free to share your comments with me by replying to this email.

Sincerely,

Joe Moore
