I invite you to attend a community meeting to review plans and vote on the design for a new playground atLazarus Park, which is located at 1257 W. Columbia (between Sheridan and Lakewood). The meeting will take place this Saturday, December 7th, 12:00 noon, at Lake Shore School, 6759 N. Greenview (at Pratt). A photo of the existing playlot is below (courtesy of Ben Woodard/DNAinfo).
I’m hosting this meeting with the Friends of the Parks in cooperation with the Chicago Park District to give parents, their children, and other interested community residents an opportunity to vote on their favorite playground design.
Those attending the meeting will be asked to vote for one of three playground designs. Adults and children alike will be invited to cast their votes. If none of the designs receives a majority of the votes, a second round of voting will be conducted between the two designs winning the most votes. The Park District has agreed to construct the playground design that wins a majority of the votes of those attending the meeting.

This past summer, I announced that four parks in the 49th Ward were on tap to receive new playgroundscourtesy of the Chicago Park District’s Chicago Plays! Playground Replacement Initiative. Lazarus Park was one of the parks selected.
The playgrounds were selected through a community application process administered by Friends of the Parks, a park advocacy organization, dedicated to preserving, protecting, and improving Chicago’s parks. I announced the initiative last March and urged neighbors to submit their favorite playground for consideration. In true Rogers Park fashion, the neighbors were enthusiastic and well-organized. As a result, every 49th Ward playground submitted for consideration was selected.
The other 49th Ward parks slated for new playgrounds are Goldberg Park, 7043 N. Glenwood (at Greenleaf),Matanky Park, 6925 N. Ridge (at Morse) and Paschen Park, 1932 W. Lunt (at Damen). Construction of Goldberg’s new playground has begun and construction of the other playgrounds will begin in spring 2014.
By next July, the 49th Ward will boast five brand new playgrounds!
I look forward to your input for the Lazarus Park playground on Saturday afternoon, December 7th.
