I am writing to invite you to a fundraising benefit that Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin and I are hosting to help cover some of the medical costs and living expenses of 49th Ward Committeeman David Fagus, who continues to struggle with a serious illness.
The benefit takes place Monday, April 15th, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at The Oasis, 6809 N. Sheridan. Free parking is available one block north in the back parking lot of Leona’s Restaurant, 6935 N. Sheridan.
His health permitting, David plans to attend the event and thank you personally. Please stop by and wish him well.
Complimentary food, including wings, beef sandwiches and vegetarian pizza will be served courtesy of JB Alberto’s. And The Oasis will providecomplimentary beer and soft drinks. In return, we ask you to make as large a donation as you can to help David pay his medical bills and cover his living expenses.
As I reported last fall, Committeeman Fagus is battling end-stage kidney disease. A transplanted kidney he received ten years ago failed and he has suffered numerous medical complications that have led to lengthy hospital stays. He hasn’t been able to work in over a year and, as a result, lost his job and employer-covered medical insurance. He has exhausted his life savings and is relying on the limited financial resources of his small extended family.
David recently sent you an update on his health. Below is an excerpt from that report:
“[O]ver the past year, my health has improved. I look better, feel better, and have increased my strength and stamina while managing to avoid hospitalization for the past few months. I am continuing to undergo physical therapy and rehabilitation which is helping to improve my ability to get around and moving me closer to a normal life.
“Unfortunately, I have experienced a new problem related to my kidney failure, which has cast doubt on whether I will be able to receive the new kidney I so desperately need. I am working with my doctors to identify and resolve this problem, but it has delayed my recovery. I never imagined I would be off work without an income for nearly a year, but that is the circumstance I find myself in.
“I am really struggling.
“The cost of medical care, even with insurance, is enormous. Living without a paycheck for a year has wiped out my meager savings. To make ends meet, I listed my condo for sale and pray that I can sell it so that I can reduce my monthly expenses.”
