Sadly, the holiday season is drawing to a close and now is the time to take down your holiday decorations and tree. Beginning this Saturday, January 4th, and continuing through Saturday, January 18th, the City in partnership with the Chicago Park District will recycle your Christmas tree free of charge.
Simply take your tree to one of 23 Chicago locations and your tree will be chipped and ground into mulch. The location closest to the 49th Ward is Warren Park, 6601 N. Western (two blocks south of Pratt). The mulch will be made available at no cost to City residents beginning Friday, January 10th, at the same locations, including Warren Park.
Recycling Christmas trees is an easy way for residents to make a big impact on the environment by keeping the alleys clear, reducing the number of trees deposited in landfills and reusing the trees in an environmentally-friendly way.
Ornaments, lights, and garland should all be removed before placing the tree in the Christmas tree corral. The City is not able to accept decorations, tree lights, wreaths, garland, or household recyclable materials at any Christmas tree recycling location.
