All Chicago-based artists are invited to submit a design for one of five murals that will grace CTA and Metra underpasses and embankments in the 49th Ward.
Murals one and two will be located on the CTA viaduct at Albion (north and south walls); the third mural at the CTA viaduct at Columbia (south wall only); and the fourth and fifth murals at the Metra viaduct at Lunt (north and south walls).
The Underpass Mural Project was one of the funding proposals that received voter approval in the Participatory Budgeting election last April in which I gave the 49th Ward residents the power to determine how to spend the 49th Ward’s capital budget allocation.

The competition is open to any Rogers Park artists or designer. You must either live in Rogers Park or have a studio in Rogers Park (defined as the area bound by the Chicago city limits on the north, Devon Avenue on the south, Lake Michigan on the east and Western Avenue on the West)
The members of the Arts and Innovation Committee of the of the 49th Ward Participatory Budgeting Project will oversee the process and a panel of art and public art specialists will review all design proposals for artistic merit, appropriateness to public presentation and originality. If more than five proposals are deemed eligible, the finalists will be submitted to a vote of the 49th Ward residents at an election to be held at the Glenwood Arts Fest, August 15-16. The five proposals winning the most votes will be selected for the underpass murals project.
Each winning artist will receive a stipend of $5,400 per mural location as follows: $500 upon contract signing and $4,900 balance upon acceptable completion of the project. Artists are responsible for providing all supplies for the project.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING YOUR PROPOSED MURAL IS July 13, 2015, at 11:59 p.m. Submissions must be sent via email to email@example.com.
If you are not an artist, but know someone who is, please forward this e-mail to them.
I look forward to seeing some exciting proposals!
