This spring, keep yard waste out of the landfill and compost your yard waste with Chicago’s Department of Streets & Sanitation.
If you currently receive City garbage collection, the City’s Department of Streets and Sanitation will help by making special pickups of bagged leaf and other yard waste. Just put it into any sort of bag (paper bag not necessary) and place the bags next to your black refuse and blue recycling carts in the alley or at the curb.
Then call 311 or my office (773-338-5796) to schedule a pickup. City crews will take the bags to be composted. You can schedule these special pickups between April 17 and April 22.
As a reminder, yard waste should not be thrown into the blue recycling cart, as it contaminates the recycling stream. Only buildings with regular city garbage pickups (single family homes and small multi-unit buildings of four units or less) can have yard waste collected through 311.
Buildings with 5+ units may have the option to compost via their waste haulers.
