Back in August of 1991, shortly after my first election as alderman, my young staff and I decided to organize a picnic behind the Loyola Park Fieldhouse to remind children and their families that a new school year was just around the corner. We put some hot dogs on the grill and organized a few games for the hundred or so kids that showed up. And the 49th Ward Back to School Picnic was born!
Now 25 years later, the 49th Ward Back to School Picnic has become a much-anticipated annual event, attended by thousands of 49th Ward families. The picnic has become even bigger more fun in recent years thanks to the generous support of my co-sponsor, State Senator Heather Steans.
Join Heather and me as we hold our 25th Annual 49th Ward Back to School Picnic, on Sunday, August 30th, 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. in Loyola Park at Farwell and the Lake.
The picnic will feature free food–including chicken sandwiches, hamburgers and hot dogs–soft drinks, music and plenty of games and prizes. We’ll have bingo for the seniors and face painting for the kids, a DJ spinning tunes, dance contests, a moonwalk and other large, inflatable carnival toys.
Best of all, we’ll be giving away free school supplies to families!
We’re also proud to feature a return appearance of the world famous Jesse White Tumbling Team. The Tumblers have been thrilling audiences since 1959. Their acrobatic performances can be seen during half-time shows for the National Basketball Association, the National Football League and Major League Baseball games. Many thanks to Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin for once again sponsoring the Tumblers’ appearance at the picnic this year.
Though the primary purpose of the picnic is to remind kids and their parents of the importance of returning to school, it is also a COMMUNITY PICNIC for people of all ages, so stop by even if your kids are grown or you’ve never had kids.
In short, it will be a fun day for EVERYONE!
