Rogers Park has a thriving and creative arts community. From the Greenleaf Art Center to the Glenwood Avenue Arts District – and more! – the 49th Ward boasts numerous arts studios, live theater and music venues.
The Glenwood Avenue Arts District website has got it right:
Rogers Park’s thriving arts and entertainment district is along Glenwood Ave at Morse Ave, an urban stretch of mixed-use buildings with an inviting European flavor: narrow cobblestone streets, murals on the elevated train embankments, and quaint storefronts.
The arts district sponsors the hugely successful – and free – Glenwood Avenue Arts Fest every August.
The Greenleaf Art Center, located block west of Clark Street on Greenleaf, provides studio and exhibition space for more than 50 artists. The center features a number of art exhibits and open studio events and creative workshops all year round.
Memberships are available for artists to both participate in workshops and exhibitions, as well as rent studio space in an open, collaborative environment.
Rogers Park Arts Alliance is an evolving, project-driven consortium of individual artists, arts organizations and businesses with the mission to advance artistic engagement within our diverse community and to promote Rogers Park as a destination for art in Chicago.
One way it does that is through sponsorship of Rogers Park Art Round Trip each October, with events and exhibits celebrating the arts in various Rogers Park venues.
The Mile of Murals is a community-based public art initiative in Rogers Park. The project began in 2007, and is sponsored by the Rogers Park Business Alliance and the Clark/Morse/Glenwood Special Service Area #24.
The 10-year project goal is to paint a full mile of murals along the CTA Red Line track from Estes Avenue to Pratt Boulevard along the Glenwood Avenue train line.
The project will result in 19 large-scale murals: ten block-long walls, seven viaduct walls, and two overpasses. New artists and themes are selected annually through a rigorous selection process juried by arts professionals and community leaders.
