Sheridan Road to be Resurfaced; Pothole Repairs Ongoing

Dear Neighbor,

I am pleased to report that Sheridan Road will undergo a complete street resurfacing from the Evanston border south to Devon Avenue. 

The project is estimated to cost $1.4 million and will be paid primarily by funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (the federal stimulus plan).  A portion of the cost will be covered by a statewide capital program proposed by Governor Pat Quinn and approved by the Illinois General Assembly earlier this month.

A date for the resurfacing project is still to be determined, but the City of Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) tells me that it will take place either this construction season or next year.  I will push hard to have it done as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, the asphalt plants have opened for the spring and summer, and CDOT is moving aggressively to fill potholes on 49th Ward streets.  The job is not done yet, however.  I know for example that this week's pothole crew missed some spots on Jonquil, Juneway and Marshfield. 

If you are aware of any potholes that still remain, please contact my office by replying to this e-mail or calling 773-338-5796 with the precise location of the pothole.  A specific address would be ideal.  This month alone, a total of 3,822 potholes were filled in the 49th Ward.  Click the attachment below for a map that details the precise location of all potholes that have been filled in the 49th Ward in April.

Each red dot on the map denotes a filled pothole.  This map will serve as a useful guide as I finalize my infrastructure requests for this summer.  As you may know, each alderman in Chicago gets about $1.3 to $1.5 million a year to allocate for various infrastructure improvements in his or her ward.  This so-called "menu money" goes to resurface streets and alleys, repair sidewalks and curbs and gutters, put in new streetlights, and the like. 

Residential street resurfacing will be high on my list this year.  Every street in the 49th Ward was resurfaced in the mid to late 1990s, and many are now due for a new resurfacing.  If you have a particular street in mind that you believe needs resurfacing, or any other infrastructure needs, please submit them to my office by replying to this e-mail or calling 773-338-5796.

Next year, I plan to institute a process for giving 49th Ward residents an even greater voice in how my menu money gets allocated.  Watch for further announcements in the weeks to come.
