New Police Commander Appointed in 24th District
Dear Neighbor,
The 24th Police District, which encompasses the 49th Ward, has a new Commander--David Sobczyk.
The appointment of the new 24th District Commander was one of a series of command staff changes that Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis announced late last week. Commander Sobczyk replaces Commander Steve Caluris, who will assume Sobczyk's former job as Commander of the Police Department's Deployment Operations Center. This unit houses Chicago's Counter Terrorism Section and serves as the Police Department's intelligence hub.
Commander Sobczyk is a 25-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department. His previous assignments include District Law Enforcement, the Public Housing Section, Gang Crimes Section, Vice Control, the Intelligence Section, Patrol Division Administration and the Gang Intelligence Section. He earned a B.A. in Criminal Justice from the University of Illinois at Chicago and an M.A. in Public Administration from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is also a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy.
Throughout his career, Commander Sobczyk assumed a wide variety of tasks. He received over one hundred Police Department awards while making transitions from street cop to supervisor to project manager to administrator. As a lieutenant, he wrote the Chicago Police Department's Y2K operational plan and participated in numerous federal task forces.
Commander Sobczyk recently constructed the design concepts for the Department's Crime Prevention and Information Center (CPIC) and the automated District Intelligence Bulletin. The CPIC is part of the Department's Deployment Operation Center and has earned wide-spread recognition as a national model for an "All-Crimes" fusion center. We are very fortunate to be the beneficiaries of Commander Sobczyk's years of experience and expertise.
I wish our old commander, Steve Caluris, all the best in his new post. Under his leadership, the 24th District this year has enjoyed a three percent reduction in index crime over the same period last year. This is particularly impressive given that Chicago citywide has experienced an increase in the crime rate.
As soon as Commander Sobczyk settles in, I will host a town hall meeting to give you an opportunity to meet him and hear his thoughts and ideas for making the 49th Ward an even safer community.
Sincerely,
Joe Moore
