Put Your Green Passions Into Practice
Dear Neighbor,
The 49th Ward Green Corps' WHY GREEN MATTERS HERE workshop series draws to a close this Monday with a call to action. For the last six weeks, hundreds of 49th Ward residents have met in the Loyola Park Fieldhouse and learned about the link between our daily activities and the environmental challenges we face in the world and our community. Together, we have learned what we can do to make the 49th Ward the greenest and most environmentally sustainable community in the nation!
Now it's time to take the next step.
Join us for the final WHY GREEN MATTERS HERE workshop "You Care. Do Something. We'll Help." The workshop will be held this Monday, March 31st, 6:30 p.m., at the Loyola Park Fieldhouse, 2nd Floor, 1230 W. Greenleaf (at the Lake).
Meet some of the outstanding members of my 49th Ward Green Corps Action Team. They're your neighbors--people who've put their passions into practice and made an impact in our neighborhood. Come see what projects they've launched in the 49th Ward and learn how you can get involved by supporting those actions or launching your own action team project.
Here are some of the projects already underway:
- Expanding recycling to multi-dwelling condominium and rental buildings.
- Installing energy efficient and cost-saving light bulbs in the homes of our senior citizens.
- Educating building owners and condomium associations on the benefits of green roofs and encouraging green roofs on new and existing developments.
- Involving our youth in the green movement through the formation of the Natural Capitalists (NatCap) Club, a club for young people who wish to start their own environmentally sustainable business.
- Establishing verma-composting at the Gale Academy greenhouse.
- Organizing a "community swap" where community residents exchange with their neighbors items they no longer wish to own, thus reducing the amount of items that are discarded and placed in landfills.
- Giving away reusable shopping bags and encouraging neighborhood businesses to provide reusable shopping bags to their customers.
Now's the time to get involved by joining one of those projects or starting your own!
Everyone who attends Monday's workshop will be entered into a drawing for a FREE rain barrel or a manual, earth-friendly lawnmower.
So stop by for a fun and energizing meeting!
Sincerely,
Joe Moore
