URGENT! Help Save Sponsor of Chicago's Foie Gras Ban
Dear Friends,
Joe Moore, the Alderman (City Council member) of Chicago's 49th Ward, put his political life on the line to protect the animals we love. As a result of his bravery, the City of Chicago has enacted a ban on the sale of foie gras and is beginning to enforce that ordinance.
Joe Moore is under attack. His political career is in jeopardy and so is the ban. In the recent Chicago City Council elections, Joe faced three opponents and fell just 51 votes shy of avoiding a run-off election. Unfortunately, he now has to face a well-funded opponent in the run-off on April 17. Joe's opponent has made the ban on foie gras central to his campaign. Here's a clip from the opponent's website (the grammatical errors are his, not ours):
Tackle 49th Ward Issues, Not Foie Gras
Chicago can host the Olympics, but can we really be a world-class with a ban on foie gras? Mon dieu! The battle is on! Join us for round in the campaign to put "freedom of choice" back on the gourmet map and restore the legal status of foie gras, here and across the land!
Joe's opponent will be backed by powerful business interests, including the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which has made Joe their number one target for defeat. Joe's opponent is also backed by the Illinois Restaurant Association, and he has benefited from several foie gras-related fundraisers sponsored by "Chefs for Choice," the organization fighting the foie gras ban.
Won't you help Joe survive this re-election so he can continue to fight for us? Joe's re-election is important beyond Chicago. If he is defeated, it will send a strong message to other elected officials to stay away from controversial, albeit humane, issues.
Joe needs your help to communicate his progressive positive message to the voters of the 49th Ward. Every vote counts just like every dollar counts. Your contribution of $1,000 helps us communicate with 1,600 voters. $500 will allow us to talk to with 800 voters, $250 will allow us to talk to 400 voters, $50 will allow us to talk with 83 voters, and $30 would have allowed us to talk with the extra 51 voters we needed to avoid the run-off.
